Free Off-Road Vehicle Training Across California

California State Parks and partners offer FREE expert-led off-road safety courses to California residents. Open to ATV and dirt bike riders ages 6+ on age-appropriate machines, and to ROV drivers 16+ with a valid license, these programs build skills for riding responsibly and confidently.

How It Works

Ideal for:

ATV riders aged 6 and up on age appropriate machines.

What You'll Learn:
  • Protective gear and pre-ride checks
  • Controls, starting, and stopping
  • Riding posture, turns, and swerves
  • Riding over obstacles
  • Riding strategies, hill and terrain techniques
  • Safe and responsible riding practices 
Requirements:
  • Bring your own ATV (some sites may offer loaners; a nominal fee may apply)
  • Complete the Online E-Course: https://cbt.svia.org
  • Bring your E-Course Completion Certificate to class

Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF)

Ideal for:

Beginners and recreational riders aged 6 and up on age appropriate machines.

What You'll Learn:
  • Protective gear and pre-ride checks
  • Controls, starting, and stopping
  • Riding posture, shifting, and lower body control
  • Turning and counterbalancing
  • Riding over obstacles
  • Riding strategies, hill and terrain techniques
  • Safe and responsible riding practices   
Requirements:
  • Bring your own dirt bike (some sites may offer loaners; a nominal fee may apply)
  • Must be able to safely operate the bike
  • Must be a competent bicycle rider

Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA)

Ideal for:

Recreational drivers of side-by-sides (ROVs) / utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) who are 16 years or older with a valid driver’s license.

  • Vehicle familiarization and equipment checks
  • Starting out and stopping
  • Low-speed steering limits
  • Backing and turning
  • Crossing obstacles
  • Quick stops and evasive maneuvers
  • Trail Etiquette and the Importance of Treading Lightly!
